Moocs could ‘transform’ UK education system

7th April 2014

Dr Anant Agarwal, the man who first pioneered the use of Moocs in higher education, has predicted that children in nurseries will soon be learning through online courses.

Commenting at an Education Foundation seminar, Dr Agarwal of MIT suggested that as today’s children are socialised with technology surrounding them, it makes sense to use these skills to learn literacy and numeracy skills through online games and learning exercises in schools or nurseries.

Dr Agarwal also discussed how Moocs could benefit the UK higher education system, claiming that the UK has been slow to embrace new technology. He predicted that education will be unrecognisable within the next ten years.

“Our main aim is to increase access to learning,” commented Dr Agarwal.

“If teachers don’t embrace it, there is no hope of going anywhere… this is the world that today’s children are being brought up in. The UK has some of the greatest universities in the world and I am interested in inviting them to join this experiment. The whole movement is less than two years old, and for those universities who have started on it, these are very, very early days” he concluded.
